Phelim starts by declaring which we often say; that God is good all the time but then goes on to ask the question, how do we stay faithful when it doesn't feel like that? He refers to Joseph as recognising God is good when he is thrown into gaol. Phelim goes on to talk on Daniel chapter 1 verses 1 - 2, where Nebuchanezzar is used by God as an instrument of judgement. However, this isn't a popular idea in the Charismatic circles as it has developed a 'bless me' mentality. This is due to a misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 14 where people start to see edification, encouragement and exaltation but Hebrews 12 v.6 says that God disciplines those whom He loves.
God is good all the time
John speaks on my identity and my purpose and starts by reading from two scriptures : 1 Peter 1: 1-5 and 1 Peter 2 : 4 - 12. John gives some background concerning Peter and the fact that he was an ordinary person but did Jesus make a mistake in choosing Peter? No, Jesus was fully aware of his weakness and failings, as He is of our weaknesses and failings. However, after Pentecost Peter lives a different life in the presence and power of the Holy spirit. John goes on to expound on the scriptures and to also lead people in a prayer of repentance.

Dave concludes the teachings from the sermon on mount. Here he is discussing the comparison of the man who built his house on a rock as opposed to the man who built directly on sand. These passages cause us to be introspective and to seek out our blind spots. Culture is at the root of this sermon. Jesus set out what it is to be His disciple, not only are we to be humble but we are to be pure.
Conclusions : Matthew 7 : 24 - 29 - Heavenly Culture 20
Dave starts by giving a definition of the gospel but then goes onto his actual sermon which is still based on the sermon on the mount in Matthew 7. This is what a Heavenly culture looks like, as the culture that surrounds us is sometimes toxic and is nothing like a Heavenly culture. Later on Dave goes on to say about false prophets and false prophecy springs from false motives. A false prophet may be someone who speaks false comfort or false alarm. A poisoned tree only brings forth bad fruit. Anything that offers a trouble free life is a fantasy.

John bases his teaching on Matthew 7 : 7 - 14. He starts by referring to various scriptures related to asking. This is often thought of as part of prayer but that becomes part of our relationship with God. Prayer exercises our faith but it also reveals our love for God and our love for others. We need the Holy Spirit to pray in the will of God. Later on John goes on to say about the aspect of living well. Here he cross references Matthew 7 to that which Luke says as it's a little more descriptive. Jesus was preparing His disciples to living life different to what they had been used to.
Asking and living well - Heavenly Culture 18
Phelim continues with a talk based on the sermon on the Mount. He reads from Matthew 7 : 1 - 6. This passage does not take a position concerning our behaviour as only God can judge you. The issue is not with us judging, as some scripture says we are to judge. As an example, we are to judge prophetic words and the spirit behind prophetic words. In Jeremiah 23, God is condemning the 'prophets' who are only saying what the people want to hear.
Judging others and yourself - Heavenly Culture 17
Dave continues his talk in Matthew 6 (25-34). He encourages us to make investment in the Kingdom of Heaven and also when we pray to spend time thinking about the end part of the disciples prayer : ' Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven' . To ask God to make it come alive to you. 'Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you', the Father gives us the key, invest your treasure in Heaven, in the Heavenly Kingdom and righteousness and the doors of Heaven open up.
Do not be Anxious - Heavenly Culture 16
Dave starts his talk with reading Matthew 6 : 19 -24. This passage is talking about the condition of our heart but what does it look like to lay up treasures in Heaven. How do I access Heaven's bank? Investing in Heaven is investing in God's coming Kingdom. We can try and protect our 'stash' on earth or we can sow it into God's Kingdom.
Treasures in Heaven - Heavenly Culture 15
Dave starts by recapping on the principles that Jesus gave His disciples of righteousness, praying, fasting and giving and it wasn't to be a public display.
We are not to try to impress others with our praying or righteousness. Jesus wants to set us free. The disciples recognised that when Jesus prayed it was very different and therefore asked Him to teach them to pray; the disciples prayer, otherwise called the Lord's prayer.
Dave unpacks the model Jesus gives us phrase by phrase.
